Have you ever wondered what marine fish eat? It may sound like a question asked by a child, but scientists take it seriously.
By examining the gut contents and muscle tissues of 16 demersal fish species and the critically endangered large yellow croaker, Prof. Jill Chiu from the Hong Kong Baptist University and Dr Smiley Wong investigate their trophic ecology and feeding dynamics. They have found that under environmental threats, such as high fishing pressure and rapid coastal development, the diets of some fishes are heavily influenced, highlighting the need for conservation measures.
During the talk, Prof. Chiu and Dr Wong will share their research and fun facts about marine fishes. Prof. Jill Chiu is an Associate Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University, specializing in marine biology and ecology. Her research focuses on the responses of marine microbes and invertebrates to environmental stress, including climate change, hypoxia, and ubiquitous contaminants. Dr. Smiley Wong is a marine ecologist specializing in predator-prey interactions and the ecological roles of marine fish species, using diet and stable isotope analyses.
